Bura is a cold, strong, dry wind from the northeast<\/strong> that forms when cold air from the mainland mountains (Velebit and \u0106i\u0107arija) crosses the Adriatic. Ba\u0161ka has around 80 bura days a year<\/strong> \u2014 83 were recorded in 2025, including 55 with storm-force gusts. They are most frequent in January, February and November. In summer (June\u2013September), bura is less common, with two to seven days per month; it usually lasts a day or two and is forecast 24\u201348 hours ahead.<\/p>\n

How to Read Our Forecast<\/h2>\n

On the homepage, you will find the \u201cBura frequency \u00b7 7 days\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 seven mini-bars showing the expected intensity for each day. The data comes from the official DHMZ Meteoalarm CAP feed, the same source used by all Croatian weather services.<\/p>\n

What to Do by bura Strength<\/h2>\n

When It Is Calm<\/h3>\n

Everything is normal. Vela pla\u017ea, diving, kayaking, SUP and boat trips around the cape towards Lopar and Cres are all available. Make the most of the day.<\/p>\n

When It Is Moderate<\/h3>\n
    \n
  • Beach<\/strong> \u2014 Vela pla\u017ea has waves, but swimming is possible. Choose the sheltered Bunculuka and Zabla\u0107e.<\/li>\n
  • Boat trips<\/strong> \u2014 not around the cape towards Lopar; shorter trips within the bay are possible if the captain confirms.<\/li>\n
  • Kayaking and SUP<\/strong> \u2014 for experienced people only, no more than 500 m from shore.<\/li>\n
  • Diving<\/strong> \u2014 only in sheltered coves (Bunculuka).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    When It Is Strong \u2014 Plan B<\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Hike to Camel Point or Vrh Ba\u0161ke<\/strong> \u2014 see bura at full strength, but safely: the trail is sheltered.<\/li>\n
    • Diving course in a sheltered cove<\/strong> \u2014 Bunculuka and the cove near Zabla\u0107e are the calmest.<\/li>\n
    • Gastro day<\/strong> \u2014 visit the restaurants and konobas you have been saving for later. The konobas in the old town are sheltered from bura.<\/li>\n
    • Trip to Krk town or Vrbnik<\/strong> \u2014 Vrbnik for konoba Nada in the wine cellar; Krk town for a walk and coffee on Vela placa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      How to Prepare<\/h2>\n
        \n
      • Clothing<\/strong> \u2014 even in summer, bring a light windbreaker and long trousers on bura days. The sun stays strong, but the wind is cooling.<\/li>\n
      • Hat and sunglasses<\/strong> \u2014 essential; the sun is stronger when the air is clear.<\/li>\n
      • Car<\/strong> \u2014 close all windows and park it away from trees.<\/li>\n
      • Roof-mounted bike<\/strong> \u2014 remove it before crossing Kr\u010dki most in bura.<\/li>\n
      • Terraces<\/strong> \u2014 restaurants may lower parasols and awnings; sit inside when it is strong.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Signs That bura Is Coming<\/h2>\n

        Locals recognise bura before they open the forecast. You can spot the six signs below from a caf\u00e9 terrace. When four appear together, bura is already here.<\/p>\n

If you are travelling with bikes on the roof, remove them before the bridge in bura.<\/p>\n<p>Bura is such a part of Ba\u0161ka\u2019s identity that local legends say, \u201cyou have to wait three days for bura to pass.\u201d A local saying holds that bura lasts 1, 3 or 7 days.<\/p>\n<p>The authors of <strong>Ba\u0161\u010danska plo\u010da<\/strong> (11th century) \u2014 the most important monument of Croatian literacy, found near Jurandvor \u2014 probably lived to the rhythm of bura.
